Hi! I'm Shahirah.
I write and report on politics, religion, culture & the arts, with a focus on Muslim communities. My work has appeared in VICE, New York Magazine, Fast Company, and This Recording. I also contribute storytelling & strategy advice at humanifestostudios, a small design & consulting studio that helps businesses tell human stories.
I was born in Seattle, grew up in Bangladesh, and studied at Columbia University, where I received a BA in anthropology and an MFA in fiction. I’m currently based in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where I am working on a book on the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Previously, I made greetings cards for cult stationery company koco ny, taught writing & composition at the Asian University for Women (the first liberal arts university in the region), and dispensed advice on how to live your best life at Unstuck.
